Did you know that in the uk the law does not specify an age when a child can be left alone?

However, parents commit an offence if leaving the child at home alone puts him or her at risk. In the light of what has happened to Madelaine there is always a risk but the risk of abduction is so small that this is not one of the risks that a parent could be blamed for irresponsibility. If there was a fire hazard - electrical appliances in arms reach or a chance that the child could be confused or go wondering off - this may be considered as putting the children at risk. does anyone think that this grey area should be clarified by law?
Answers:
Sometimes you don't need a law, a four old being left at home on her own is just severly poor common sense.

No, i don't think all these little grey areas should be covered by laws, if you can't do the right thing in the world a law for every little possible eventuality just doesn't work because the people that break them (don't understand them) will still do so as who is going to enforce it?

Also it just aggravates the millions of people who aren't stupid enough to do it and will feel a law is just pathetic bureaucracy
I didn't know that. My parents always told me that I'm not allowed to stay home alone until I'm 11. Thanks for that info. I think it's stupid that they don't clarify this. Although, if they were in a different country, then it could be a different law.
I'm getting away from the point now, so yes, I do think this area should be clarified.
:)
children mature at different rates and so i don't think that there should be a law which states a certain age (no-one would be able to agree on an age anyway) and it should be the parents' choice - they know their child best.
Ugh. If we had laws like that we'd have to test people the right to be parents. This is common sense. If you mess up, your kids are taken away %26 you're monitored. And it's sad the kids have to pay for the parent messing up.

I feel for Madeleines parents, I hope they find her. It seems like they've had a lot of leads where most kidnappings are just an empty trail....but they had a sitting service there. This could have been prevented.
I was made aware of this fact after watching the Trevor MacDonald show on the case.
I have a daughter who is a couple of months younger than little Maddie and I would never dream of leaving her alone for a second. It doesn't matter what the law stipulates there are always risks to children that know no better. I really do believe that there should be a realistic age limit for leaving children alone but I don't believe it is possible to cover every eventuality by laws.

The parents of children under 16yrs old should be fully responsible for thier offspring and the parents that cannot do this should be prevented from having children.

Children are designed to be constantly learning about their environment and they are naturally inquisitive. Of course they are bound to get into all sorts of mischief when left to their own devices.

Obviously, in the Maddie case there were outside influences that couldn't be predicted, but my family went to Disneyland Paris recently and we would not even leave children as old as 9 sleeping in the room whilst we went outside our room for a cigarette. We would never leave them to go out dining.

It is very hard not to judge Maddie's parents on this matter but they did know their children better than anyone and none of us really know how far away from the room they were and their visibility from where they were. They obviously felt that it was a safe position to be in. I have heard that they thought they were being watched though. Wouldn't that make you even more careful when considering the safety of your children?
Yes, I think that the parents have a duty to provide constant supervision of their children at least until they reach their teens, and even after then they should be accountable for their childrens actions, until the "child" is legally accountable.
If the kid commits a crime then Mum or Dad do time. This should go some ways into repelling the young crime culture developing in this country.

As for Madelaine, a child of three is by no way ready to be left alone in their own home let alone abroad in a strange Hotel.

What this family have done to this poor child beggars belief. And yet now we are all expected to feel sorry for them, and help ease their pain, by digging deep and contributing to the fund that allows them to live in a warm sunny country not working.

I say should Madelaine ever turn up that the courts intervene and find an adopted family for her, one that isn't going to neglect her.

And sorry but you do blame the parents as had they have been there this would not have happened.

If this child had of caused a house fire and burnt to death, then the populace and media of this country would be baying for the parents blood.

It makes no difference, house fire or abduction, the child was selfishly neglected so the parents could go out and enjoy themselves.

This family are extremely lucky not to be banged up in my opinion, and then they had the nerve to suggest that the Police are not doing enough for them.

Get this family off our TV screens and lets us see some Police spokesperson appealing to us.

The horrible thing is, that this family are using the media circus to feel better about themselves and garnering public support for their actions, getting to meet the Pope etc etc.

Heres a sickening thought. They will, if they haven't already, be employing the likes of Max Clifford, writing a book, and preparing a script for film, getting ready to pocket the proceeds.
no wonder the mc canns did not get it.
yes there should be a law, no parents should leave there children, until they are 17 years old, all the best
