George Galloway may have known that his campaign against Iraq sanctions was being illicitly bankrolled with aid money diverted by Saddam Hussein, the Charity Commission has said.
The Mariam Appeal set up by the controversial MP to oppose the embargo received at least $376,000 (拢230,000) in improper donations.
The cash came from the Jordanian businessman Fawaz Zureikat, chairman of the charity, who gave kickback payments to the dictator's regime in return for a major contract under the UN's oil-for-food programme, it claims.
The commission found that the Mariam trustees failed to "properly discharge their duty of care" by checking the source of the funding.
"Had the charity trustees done so, they almost certainly would have discovered that there was a connection between the appeal and the improper transactions conducted under the programme," the report stated.
The charity commission have stated clearly to check this was a simple operation
