Could someone please shed light on this, i'm very confused about this "crossing the border" thing...

So im talking to someone and they tell me that in order to go to canada with someone other than your parents you have to be UNDER 16, but if your 18 you can go alone. So that makes it at the age of 17 your not allowed into canada without your parents. Which makes no sense to me at all. Then they said that there cousin tried to get in on there own when they had been under the age of 18 and been put in jail and had to get bailed out. This is an American telling me this. Is this true ?. It seems like a childish tale.

Bringing children into Canada:

Border services officers are on alert for children who need protection. Children under the age of 18 are classified as minors and are subject to the same entry requirements as any other visitor to Canada.

Minors travelling alone must have proof of citizenship and a letter from both parents detailing the length of stay, providing the parents鈥?telephone number and authorizing the person waiting for them to take care of them while they are in Canada.

If you are travelling with minors, you must carry proper identification for each child such as a birth certificate, passport, citizenship card, permanent resident card or Certificate of Indian Status.

If you are divorced or separated, you should carry with you copies of the legal custody agreements for your children. If you are travelling with minors and you are not their parent/guardian, you should have written permission from the parent/guardian authorizing the trip. The letter should include addresses and telephone numbers of where the parents or guardian can be reached and identify a person who can confirm that the children are not being abducted or taken against their will.

If you are travelling with a group of vehicles, make sure you arrive at the border in the same vehicle as your children, to avoid any confusion.

This is copied from the Canada Border Services Agency.
They have detained minors and adults who do not present them with the proper paperwork that proves you are a U.S. citizen. Be sure you have all your required papers, and now the new law requires a passport if flying in or out of Canada.

Hoped this helped you.
hmmm thats weird i've never heard that but i don't know much about that so you might want to talk to someone in your government about that
Hmm..
I heard that if a 17 year old tries to cross into Canada alone, the Canadians eat him. And sell his clothes on eBay.
if you are under the age of 18 you must be accompanied by your parents or have a legal certified document stating that the people you are with are responsible for you, your actions for the duration of your visit.if you are 18 then you can go alone with proper documentation
