Dangers of allowing someone to use your Social Security number (fraud)...?

In a completely HYPOTHETICAL context. if my parents asked me to use my SSN for a cousin who couldn't get his own in the US, how would I best communicate that this is a bad idea. I'm working abroad with an US company. I realize that this is a bad idea just to have other people knowing your SSN, especially someone you don't really trust, but...

can someone spell out more reasons (and penalties) not to do this so I could warn against it? Thanks.
Answers:
搂 408. Penalties
(a) In general
Whoever鈥?br />(8) discloses, uses, or compels the disclosure of the social security number of any person in violation of the laws of the United States;
shall be guilty of a felony and upon conviction thereof shall be fined under title 18 or imprisoned for not more than five years, or both.

Additionally "The Social Security Act does not require an individual (citizen) to have a Social Security number to live and work within the United States, nor does it require an SSN simply for the purpose of having one."
And
"Paragraph (1) of subsection (a) of section 7 of the Privacy Act, an uncodified provision, states in part:
(1) It shall be unlawful for any Federal, State or local government agency to deny to any individual any right, benefit, or privilege provided by law because of such individual's refusal to disclose his social security account number."
This would probably be considered a federal offense. I would tell them absolutely not. If they wanted to do this with their ss# then fine.
you could tell them you could go to jail for it. besides they are starting to check ssn really good so most likely the person using ur social wont write their name on the application and writes their own, eventually they would catch them.
You would both be in trouble so tell your parents that your covering your own butt and your cousin's. Identity fraud is out there and it doesn't have to be a stranger who takes yours. Explain that you love them both but this is not the answer.
Yes it is fraud and everyone involved including your parents can be in trouble. You never let anyone use you SS card, never. It can mess you up more than you can even imagine. I would communicate by saying "you nuts". Not only no, but hell no. that is what you say. Why would you let a illegal use your card, usually they steal some one else's.
SSN numbers get stolen everyday. People use them for different reasons. If your cousin is using your number and gets caught in a criminal act, you are at fault, such as getting a credit card in your name and running up a bill of thousands of dollars, not to mention if he gets a drivers license and it has your social on it, and he gets in an accident with no insurance, you will be at fault for letting him use it in the first place. If he does all these things and you say that he stole it, then he will do time in prison because someone has to be liable for the wrong doing. If your cousin is under age and you are of age and he uses it to get a picture ID or drivers license, it will be in your name and if he gets caught in the bar drinking or buying alcohol, you are at fault because again, it is your SSN, or worse if he drives while drinking and gets a DUI, whose number is it? Yours of course. Are you willing to take these risks? Just remember, if he is using your SSN, he is also using your full name. Also, even if you are overseas, you are still using your SSN for work and how would you file a W2 form if your cousin is also using your SSN?
Do you ever want to own a cell phone? rent an apartment? lease a car? get a credit card? buy a house? cable TV? If so... Then you should never, ever let anyone use your ss#!
