DNA profiling?

so i have this friend who got into trouble with the law. (yes i know, all stories that start with "friend" usually means "i" but for real.she's young and stupid, i on the other hand, have a family to keep me in line...)
she was drinking and driving with her daughter and the police charged her with endangering a child and she has three years probation. soon she will have to give blood for a DNA profile. she is required to do so as a term of their probation. my question is: what is a DNA profile? just so they can have you in the system, like fingerprints? or is it more? the adult corrections dept. took care of this and i assume they would ship the blood to a lab to be worked on. she is concerned that they may test the blood for recent drug use or anything of the sort. yes, i know, i tell her all the time just to obey the terms of her probation and she wouldn't have to worry about anything, but most 20 yr. olds think they are invinsible. so can anyone give us some info?
Answers:
The DNA profile is just what it says, a profile. It is like a fingerprint database. With computing power what it is, it makes sense now to keep files on as many people as possible. If it weren't for that damned Constitution, they'd get a sample from every baby born in this country. That would make police work so much easier.

The reason that she is obliged to give the sample is that she wouldn't get probation without it. Tit for tat. And, no, they won't do a drug test, as that would be unconstitutional. AFTER she enters the probationary system, though, she can be required to take a drug test at any time.

You really need to reconsider who your friends are. We expect this type of behavior from men, but women who drink and drive with their children in the car have deeper issues than immaturity. Legally, men and women must be treated the same, but morally (and sociologically) we know they are not. Like I said, a 20 year old man who does this is just a stupid 20 year old man. A 20 year old mother who does this should be held to a higher standard. That's what evolution dictates.
They took the dna b/c she's charged w/ a crime. They will keep it to investigate not her, but comparison's of other crimes. She does not have to worry on this. She is lucky they don't take her kids and make her sign into re-hab!!
